It is with sadness that we report the loss of two of our retired squash club members Glyn Laver and Margaret Wilkes both taken from their families and those who knew them much too soon.

Glyn was a fellow work colleague of mine and many years ago I had the dubious pleasure of reintroducing him to squash in our lunchtimes at Ketley Squash Centre, long since been demolished.

From that introduction, I persuaded him to join the Lilleshall Squash & Racketball Club and he went on to enjoy many years playing with us.

When he retired from the game in about 1983, he walked in to my office one day and plonked a trophy on my desk and said that “he wanted to present it to the club for the over 50’s to play for”. He expounded the view that “the old ones should have something to play for”. Hence The Laver Trophy came in to being.

After he retired from squash he went on to play bowls and was also a keen member of the Newport Male Voice Choir and also enjoyed his dancing.

Glyn died after a long battle with cancer on the 27th May 2010.

Margaret was Dave Wilkes' wife. Dave was a keen player and great exponent of the game and was for many years our club captain.

Margaret joined the club with him and was equally a fine squash player, as can be seen from the Honours Board she won the Ladies Championship on many occasions. Margaret was also a keen committee member and took her responsibilities very seriously organising many of our Social Events.

She and Dave also introduced their two children, Phil and Claire to the game. Claire was a member until quite recently when she left the club to look after her Mom.

Margaret died on the 30th June 2010 again after a long battle with a brain tumour.

We remember them both with affection and our thoughts go out to their families at this very sad time. May they both rest in everlasting peace.
